Mrs. Calkin's Classroom
Instructor: Mrs. Calkins
AIS/Reading class is held at a time when your child will NOT miss any core curriculum learning situations.

In AIS/Reading class we read and work on skills and strategies that the children are struggling with in their classroom.   Small grouping by reading level helps the children to be more positive and self confident about reading with their peers.  It also provides the students with a "bag of tools" to use and apply when reading.

My Personal Goal for your child:  "I believe that every child needs to be able to read to do everything."  Children don't often stop and think about what they need for their future.  My goal for them to feel confident that they can succeed.  As a mom of three children, I realize the stresses of everyday life and how hectic things can get.  Please enjoy your child(ren) and provide them with opportunites to do quality family activities like reading a book together, playing a game one night a week, or just talking about their day.  This can make their confidence and self esteem soar.   Remember the quote:  "The memories of reading together last a life time."

Assessment Dates
The STAR Early Literacy, STAR Reading, STAR Math and  Fountas and Pinnell Assessments will be given three times this year.  Fall, Winter and Spring which will provide benchmark data for determination of student progress.  Classroom teachers, Title I/AIS teachers and Resource Room teachers are assisting with testing Grades K-8.  Please contact your child's classroom teacher, an administrator or I,  if you have any questions about assessment and your child.

Benchmark testing continues to occur during September, End of January, and May every year for ALL students Grades K-8.

Progress monitoring will also be part of the continued observation of students throughout the school year, to allow the teachers to keep a sharp eye on progression, in order to assist your child.
